A meeting in Canada next month will focus on the question of whether international rules should govern labeling of food that contains some level of biotech ingredients. The European Union is expected to renew its proposal before the Codex Committee on Food Labeling. The U.S. delegation to the Quebec City meeting will repeat its request that the idea be dropped.
In a statement, the EU said it trongly believes that Codex should issue recommendations on the labeling of foods. The EU believes such a ruling would be extremely useful for developing countries. Members of the Biotechnology Industry Organization and the International Council of Grocery Manufacturers Association support the U.S. position.
The BIO believes consensus will not be possible as labeling is handled differently around the world. The organization believes biotech food labeling is not a health and safety issue.
