Delegates from about 180 nations, meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, are working on solving the differences between the nations on how to fight climate change. There has been little progress to report. This meeting is seen as being an important step before environment ministers meet in Copenhagen to try to seal a tougher global pact to replace the Kyoto Protocol.
The Unite Nations climate panel says rich nations should cut emissions between 25-40% from 1990 levels by 2020 to avoid dangerous climate change. But cuts pledged by industrialized states remain well below this level.
