Workhorse Utility Vehicle Line Launched

Bobcat's four new utility vehicle models are built for work.

Bobcat is in the side-by-side utility vehicle market, but they don't want you confuse their machines for those that might also be used for recreation.

"I don't want you to get the impression it's a Polaris vehicle painted white," said Lance Mathern, segment application market manager for Bobcat, during a media event in Atlanta on Wednesday. "We're focused on the work first, recreation second."

"Don't have fun," Robert Gilles chimed in. The product application manager for landscaping was grinning. He was minutes away from getting really muddy as he rowed shotgun in the Bobcat 3400 with editors for agricultural and landscape magazine behind the wheel. And that was without letting them go in high gear.

The four new Bobcat UTV models are the result of a 18-month collaboration between Polaris and Bobcat engineers. The result is four UTVs with increase payloads and greater towing and cargo capacity. Horsepower also is increased on all the models, topping out at 32 hp, and increasing speed to 30 mph.

"It doesn't seem like a lot," Gilles said. "It's enough to make a difference in acceleration and overall performance of the vehicle."

The 3400 certainly held its own on a track filled with rocks, hills and mud holes.

A few particulars on Bobcat's new UTVs:

• Four models: 3200 (4x2), 3400 (4x4), 3400XL (4x4) and 3450 (4x4)
• Increased horsepower for all models, up to 32 hp
• Two gears, high and low, and top speed of 30 mph
• Increased payload capacities, up 33% from previous models
• Electronic fuel-injected gas 4x4 models
• Four-wheel independent suspension improves agility over rough terrain
• Durability and uptime features include: Sealed CVT guard, skid plate, CV shield, radiator guard and composite cargo bed
• RapidLink attachment mounting system on Bobcat 3450 utility vehicle
