The 2007-2008 crop of winter wheat in several areas is experiencing some problems due to dry weather. According to USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey 49% of the crop is rated good to excellent, down from 53% last week and 59% last year.
"It's not looking real good for winter wheat right now," Rippey says. "Looking at some of the individual states we certainly see problems developing very quickly up and down the High Plains And we see some deterioration in Montana, the Southeast and even in the Ohio Valley we've seen a slide in conditions."
Most of the winter wheat has been planted; 95% as of Nov. 11 which is at the five-year average. However Rippey says dry conditions in many areas are causing problems with emergence, with much of the crop lagging behind normal averages.
