Winter Wheat Seeding Already Underway in Western Canada

An early spring wheat harvest has Canadian farmers putting winter wheat in earlier.

Published: Sep 10, 2007

Many Canadian farmers are already planting winter wheat and according to the executive manager of Winter Cereals Canada Jake Davidson, acreage should run about the same as 2006. However; Canada nearly doubled the acres planted in 2006 compared to the previous year, and Davidson says Saskatchewan in particular could see a significant increase in winter wheat acres because wet conditions kept farmers from planting spring wheat this year.

It's too early to tell just how many acres will be planted to winter wheat, but Davidson says there is a lot of interest in planting winter wheat. The strong prices and demand for winter wheat coupled with its higher yield potential and more time to get it in the ground because of the early harvest of spring wheat all point to the possibility of a larger crop this year.
