The World Health Organization reports nearly 6,500 cases of the H1N1 virus around the world. Sixty-five deaths have been reported with cases having been confirmed in 33 countries - the vast majority of cases in Mexico and the United States.
Experts are now meeting in Geneva to decide whether drug makers should switch to production of a flu vaccine to deal with the new outbreak. The seasonal flu kills 500,000 people a year so the WHO will want to be sure that the H1N1 outbreak poses a severe threat before recommending the switch.
Mexico's Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova told Reuters the flu was infecting fewer people and was likely to cause no more than 100 deaths in his country.
