The World Health Organization is focusing on quick response to outbreaks of the H1N1 virus to minimize its impact, rather than on attempting to halt growth of the virus. The WHO is not advocating a uniform global plan, saying each country will prefer to tailor its response to its own circumstances.
Here in the United States, officials say that overall influenza activity is abating. There has been no decision as to which populations should be targeted with the first flu vaccines. A vaccination program is not likely to start until October.
Canada seems to be the best prepared. There the government believes everyone who needs a dose of the flu vaccine will get at least one shot before Christmas. That country has a pre-existing contract obligating pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline to prioritize Canada's need in the event of a pandemic.
In Mexico, where the virus originated, outside of isolation, little is known about their plan to attack the H1N1 virus.
