White House Forms Child Obesity Task Force

First Lady will lead national awareness effort.
Compiled by staff
Published: Feb 10, 2010

President Obama has pledged his administration to a redoubling of efforts to solve the problem of childhood obesity. The goal is to make it possible for children born today to reach adulthood at a healthy weight. The President says this goal will be reached through a comprehensive approach that builds on effective strategies, engages families and communities, and mobilizes both public and private sector resources. First Lady Michelle Obama will lead a national public awareness effort to tackle the epidemic of childhood obesity.

To meet this goal a Task Force is being formed. This task force will be made up of the Secretaries of Interior, Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Education; the director of the office of Management and Budget; the Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady: the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and the heads of other executive departments, agencies, or offices.

The proposed strategy is to update child nutrition policies in a way that addresses the best available scientific information, ensuring access to healthy, affordable food in schools and communities, as well as increasing physical activity and empowering parents and caregivers with the information and tools they need to make good choices for themselves and their families.
