When Will House Vote on Climate Change?

Schedule is uncertain as work to secure votes continues.

The House has been closing in on climate change legislation and a deal reached by Energy Chair Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and Agriculture Chair Collin Peterson, D-Minn., on ag this week was expected to win the support of Democrats from rural districts. But that reportedly hasn't happened and it could delay the climate change vote. As Democratic leaders continue to work to get the votes they need from their own party Peterson says the vote might get pushed to Saturday as there are still some things being worked out.

Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., is one member of the Ag Committee not swayed by the agreement Peterson was able to nail down. Per capita energy use in North Dakota is among the highest in the nation and he says the state could face a double whammy from legislation that puts a price on fossil fuel emissions. That's why he'll vote no. And he doubts the other Ag Committee members will go along as easily as expected. But Edward Markey, D-Mass., is trying to change that. He met with several ag members Wednesday.

But it's not just agriculture holding out. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., met with Ohio Democrats Wednesday and House leaders have called on former Vice President Al Gore to make one-on-one phone calls with members to help secure votes.
