The Argentine government is in the middle of negotiations with farmers in an attempt to prevent another strike. Last month farmers went on strike for three weeks before a 30-day truce was called on April 1. Because of the uncertainty, the Agriculture Secretariat has suspended wheat exports until a new course of action is defined. Farm leaders and government officials will be meeting Tuesday to discuss the wheat sector.
This latest closure of the wheat registry follows several extensions of the close of wheat exports since January, when it was announced that an additional 2 million metric tons of wheat would be released for export. According to the Agriculture Secretariat, more than 7 million metric tons of wheat has already been declared for export. The USDA predicts Argentina will have about 10 million metric tons of wheat available to be exported.
