The International Grains Council expects, with the exception of Russia, that all major exporters of wheat will increase 20ll plantings. With strong wheat prices world-wide, the IGC expected total wheat production area to increase by 4%, from 534 million acres to 554 million acres in 2011. Russia will continue to feel the effects of this year's drought moving into 2011. The IGC estimates Russian winter wheat seeding will fall to 28 million acres, approximately 14% below last year's planted area.
For a replacement crop, Valentina Shustova, U.S. Wheat Moscow Office Director and Marketing Specialist, says it is likely that some potential spring wheat production area will be lost to sunflower. Sunflower is the most profitable crop for Russian producers this year.
Don Schieber, a wheat producer from Ponca City, Okla., and current U.S. Wheat Chairman, learned of another concern about spring wheat from a Russian official on a recent visit. Schieber says when asked if spring wheat could make up for some of the lost production area for winter wheat his answer was "not enough seed."
