Weigh Your Storage Options

Compare your costs and potential benefits before putting grain in the bin.

Storage bins sprouted up across the country the past several years as farmers were rewarded for holding grain beyond harvest. However, those dynamics aren’t as certain this year, depending on the timing of the first frost and potential drying charges and grain condition.

The University of Illinois developed a spreadsheet to compare the benefits of selling grain at harvest versus storage. It will calculate the breakeven price that you’ll need to receive to assure a positive return for storing the grain, while also computing the chances of receiving a price above breakeven levels to assist you in your storage deci-sion.

We’ve chosen the spreadsheet as our Farm Futures Spreadsheet of the Month. The 693-kilobyte spreadsheet should work with Excel 2000, 2002 or Excel XP.

Do you have a spreadsheet that’s made a difference on your operation that you’d be willing to share with other readers? Drop us a line at FarmFutures@farmprogress.com with a description of the spreadsheet. We’ll pay $75 if we feature your farmer-written non-commercial pro-gram as our Spreadsheet of the Month.
