Though February hardly means spring for most Midwest farmers, those on the southern Plains got their first taste of seasonal storms last week, and the results were deadly. The rains did fall on some of the driest areas of the hard red winter wheat belt, however, likely providing at least a little benefit to the crop.
Not all of the dry areas got much, especially in the western half of Kansas. The La Nina pattern appears to be holding, increasing the potential for nervousness this spring.
