WEEKLY FINANCIAL REVIEW: Will Dollar Be Next Safe Haven to Fail?

Conservative investments almost as risky as any others.
Bryce Knorr
Published: Mar 3, 2009

Investors and money managers around the world have plenty of reasons to look for safe places to park their cash. After erasing 12 years of gains, the stock market is a very risky place to be right now.

Of course, boys will be boys. So those looking for "safe havens" can't resist trying to find one with upside potential. Thanks to the herd mentality, this has made the markets in supposedly conservative investments almost as risky and volatile as all that bad subprime debt that caused the financial system to collapse in the first place.

Take the bond market, for example. For sure, 30-year Treasuries are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. But nobody who's traded these securities would call them safe. The long bond is notoriously volatile.
