Despite mostly steady prices on international terminal markets, fertilizer prices for farmers in the U.S. are starting to move higher, with seasonal buying kicking in. However, quotes to producers vary widely as suppliers who bought inventory at last fall's record highs try to "average down" their overall prices.
Prices for urea, DAP and potash all rose in the latest USDA survey of Illinois prices this week, following trends from earlier in January at the wholesale level. Wide gaps remain between farmgate prices and those available at ocean ports.
DAP, for example, was reported between $525 and $850 a ton in Illinois, with an average price of $710, up more than $83 from January. DAP at the Gulf actually traded $6 a ton lower, at $311.75.
