Weather Gives Spring Wheat a Boost
USDA rated 81% of U.S. spring wheat in good to excellent condition.

Thanks to good weather conditions, the U.S. spring wheat crop is starting strong, according to the USDA crop progress report.
USDA rated 81% of the crop in good to excellent condition as of May 20, compared to 76% at that point the year before and 79% in the previous week.
Planting was 95% complete, compared to the five-year average of 86%, and emergence was 74% complete, well above the five-year average of 60%.
"We're certainly in better condition than we have been in the last couple years," Rick Vallery, the South Dakota Wheat Inc. executive director, says in a Dow Jones report.
"We're really moving along because of the warmer weather we've had in May," says North Dakota State University Extension agronomist Joel Ransom. "Now we've had cooler weather, and that's good for small grains. It seems like every area has received good rainfall."
