Waterways Council Wants Funding for Locks and Dams

NCGA CEO Tolman has been appointed to the council's board of directors.

National Corn Growers Association CEO Rick Tolman will serve on the board of directors of the Waterways Council. NCGA says the appointment demonstrates the group's commitment to improving the waterways important for the prompt, safe and cost-effective shipment of U.S. ag goods. Tolman notes U.S. growers have relied on America's inland waterways as an important part of moving U.S. grain to markets around the globe for decades. He says use of the waterways helps save money and energy while significantly reducing environmental impacts as well.

The Waterways Council is the national public policy organization that advocates for a properly funded and well-maintained system of inland waterways and ports. NCGA helped spearhead the passage of the Water Resources Development Act in 2007 to authorize repairs on an aging lock and dam system on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. Now both groups are interested in seeing the funds appropriated for that project.
