U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced steps to promote advanced biofuels production last week. During the announcement he expressed the importance of ensuring the biofuels opportunity is realized in all parts of the country.
In order to reach that point, Vilsack says political support is needed, which is why he's pleased President Obama recognized in his State of the Union address that biofuels can help the U.S. win the future and out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the rest of the world.
According to Vilsack the country is making progress in the development of next-generation biofuels.
"There is ongoing work that will produce millions of gallons of fuel," Vilsack said. "We're continuing to do research at five virtual research centers that USDA has set up in this area of biofuels and energy. It is a major thrust and it's particularly important now that EPA has come out and basically blessed E15 for vehicles 2001 and on."
With more research and incentives President Obama said the nation can break its dependence on oil with biofuels.
