USDA officials reported on the feedback from breakout sessions during the National Rural Summit held last Thursday at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo. From those reports Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was able to draw some conclusions on reoccurring themes that came from the various breakout sessions.
"I think there is a growing consensus in rural America about the importance of working collaboratively," Vilsack said.
The secretary went on to say that means there is a need for flexibility in USDA programs based on region and circumstances. He also addressed the importance of encouraging more young people to live and build successful careers in rural areas.
"I think what we have to begin doing a better job of is talking to our sons and daughters about the tremendous opportunities they can have in rural communities," Vilsack said. "We have to market rural America."
Vilsack adds that the rest of the country to understand the importance of agriculture and for the rest of the country to know the contribution that rural America makes to every family in this country.
