Leading representatives in the ag industry from Vietnam came to the U.S. focusing on the use of U.S. corn, sorghum, distiller's dried grains with solubles and corn gluten meal in swine rations. Their trip was sponsored by the U.S. Grains Council. The representatives were able to learn how to utilize U.S. feed grains and also purchase equipment, semen, breeding stock and health products. USGC President and CEO Thomas Dorr says the program is funded by USDA's Market Access Program and has a record of successfully expanding the demand for U.S. feed grains in commercial diets.
USGC regularly provides managerial and technical training to Vietnamese swine farmers. Dorr says the program itself is instrumental in helping partner swine producers expand their operations, increase farm sizes and increase the use of feed grains DDGS and CGM in their operations.
USDA reports show the Vietnamese animal feed industry is experiencing an 8-10% annual growth rate. USDA also states imported corn is competitive in Vietnam, but DDGS has also been used by the feed industry in Vietnam to lower manufacturing costs, making it a strong competitor to locally grown corn. U.S. DDGS exports to Vietnam totaled over 254,000 tons last year while corn exports totaled a little more than 57,000 tons.
