Guardian Energy, a joint venture between ethanol plants in Little Falls, Benson, Claremont, and Winthrop, Minn. as well as Mason City, Iowa and Minden, Neb., has closed on the purchase of the 100 million gallon per year ethanol plant in Janesville, Minn., previously owned by VeraSun.
Guardian Energy CEO and board President Randall Doyal said his firm is rapidly working to bring the facility on line this fall. When up and running it will have 45 new employees, and Doyal pledged to work closely with local farmers to create a new, value-added market for their corn.
The pending start up of this once-idled facility continues the trend of increasing profitability in the ethanol industry. Currently, the industry is capable of producing 11.5 billion gallons of ethanol a year and well on its way to meeting the targets of the Renewable Fuels Standard.
