The 2002 Farm Bill established a program for the procurement of biobased products by federal agencies and a voluntary program for labeling of biobased products, later named the BioPreferred Program. Expanded provisions related to the program were included in the 2008 Farm Bill. The major problem is establishing the requirements in order for a product to be labeled as a "USDA Certified Biobased Product."
On Tuesday, July 22, USDA will hold a public meeting at their headquarters in Washington, D.C. from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pre-registration is not required but for security purposes, attendees are asked to provide their names in advance as they appear on government issued identification by e-mailing biopreferred@usda.gov.
Those unable to attend the public meeting in person may participate via an audio bridge by calling 1-800-857-5233, and use the verbal pass code "Town Hall." Callers will be placed in listen-only mode during the presentation of information, but may verbally join the question and answer portion of the meeting. Written comments about the BioPreferred labeling program will also be accepted at biopreferred@usda.gov until August 1.
