USDA Names Another FFAS Deputy

Scuse's primary responsibility will be domestic programs.

Published: Apr 14, 2009

Michael Scuse was appointed deputy under secretary of USDA's Farm and Foreign Agricultural Service on Tuesday. His primary responsibility will be domestic programs with the Farm Service Agency and Risk Management Agency. Bud Philbrook was named a deputy on Monday, focusing on international matters with the Foreign Agriculture Service.

"Michael Scuse brings two very important experiences to his role as deputy under secretary for FFAS," said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.  "He has proven executive management skills from his work as former Delaware Governor Minner's chief of staff and agriculture secretary, and he knows farming, because for 35 years he and his brother have run a successful grain and livestock operation in his home state.  Michael will be a great support to Under Secretary Miller in rounding out the FFAS team."

Scuse served as Delaware Ag Secretary from 2001 to 2008. During his time in that post he was elected vice president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and president of the Northeast Association of State Departments of Agriculture. Scuse also oversaw the successful eradication of avian influenza from broiler flocks with the assistance of the University of Delaware and the state's poultry industry.
