The reorganization is the service's most significant business practice change since its founding.

The USDA Forest Service will centralize many of its business operations in the organization's most significant change of business practices since its founding in 1905.

"Centralizing the Forest Service's administrative services makes good common sense and aligns with the President's goal of increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs, " says USDA Secretary Mike Johanns. "This change enables the Forest Service to redirect crucial funds from administrative functions back to mission-critical programs."

Many of the service's operations, including human capital management, will be relocated to a facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The facility covers 92,455 square feet and currently has 109 employees, with that number expected to rise to 360.

The Albuquerque center currently provides human resource services to 4,530 Forest Service employess, but by September of 2007, it will serve around 39,000 employees.
