USDA and FDA seek comments ahead of the Codex Committee on Food Additives meeting in Beijing this April.

Published: Feb 27, 2007

Ahead of an international meeting on food standards this April, USDA and the Food and Drug Administration are calling a public meeting to gather comments on what citizens believe should be on the agenda and what positions the U.S. should take.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the Food and Drug Administration of the Department of Health and Human Services announced a public meeting Tuesday to provide information and receive comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions for the 39th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives, to be held in Beijing, China, April 24-28, 2007.

The public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 8, from 3 - 5 p.m.

Two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, created Codex in 1963 to develop food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The public meeting is scheduled to be held in the auditorium (Room 1A003), Harvey W. Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Highway, College Park, Md. Attendees are encouraged to register electronically at ccfa@fda.hhs.gov by March 6. Early registration is encouraged.

For agenda items and documents related to the CCFA schedule, visit  www.codexalimentarius.net/current.asp.

Comments can also be submitted electronically at ccfa@fda.hhs.gov.
