Although South Korea has banned beef from a number of U.S. packing facilities due to bone chips, Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says discussions are continuing and the fact that Korea continues to work with the U.S. is a good sign.
"I feel like we have made progress with Korea and I still have confidence that these issues can be worked out," says Johanns.
The dispute over beef trade is a major stumbling block to the free trade agreement that is pending between the U.S. and South Korea. Legislators have made it clear they will not consider approving the free trade agreement until the beef issues are worked out.
