U.S. Could Resume Poultry and Turkey Exports to EU

After 14-year prohibition EU may accept U.S. poultry.
Compiled by staff
Published: Apr 15, 2010
U.S. poultry and turkey producers may be on the brink of exporting their products to the European Union. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has asked the U.S. poultry industry to compile a list of poultry companies that definitely desire to export to the EU and are willing to be test cases for a "systems audit" of the industry by EU veterinary inspectors. The result could be the end to the prohibition on the export of U.S. poultry to the EU that has been in place since 1996.

Those close to the negotiations say these "audits" will include on-farm reviews using the National Chicken Council's and the National Turkey Federation's Good Manufacturing Practices programs. Unlike the more familiar Russian inspections, the Europeans would visit a limited number of individual facilities, probably six chicken and turkey complexes, in order to determine whether the
U.S. poultry production, processing and USDA inspection systems are equivalent to those of the EU.

A successful audit would clear the way for the
U.S. to begin exporting poultry to the EU, provided companies are willing to adhere to stringent EU requirements. A successful audit would also empower the Food Safety and Inspection Service to certify U.S. plants for export to the EU. The U.S. and the EU have been negotiating the system audit concept for some time as a way of regaining approval for U.S. poultry to be exported to Europe.
