Wednesday Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk will join Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan in a dialogue during the 21st session of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade. During the meeting in Washington, officials will discuss progress made by several working groups on trade issues such as intellectual property rights, agriculture, medical devices and pharmaceuticals, and travel and tourism.
U. S. lawmakers want to make sure the U.S. talks with China increase markets for U.S. goods and safeguard U.S. intellectual property. In a letter to Secretaries Vilsack and Locke and Representative Kirk, more than 30 members of the House Ways and Means Committee wrote that for too long, China's commitments have failed to lead to commercially meaningful market access for U.S. companies. In particular they urged the securing of robust commitments from China that will protect the range of U.S. industries.
Established in 1983, the JCCT is the primary forum for addressing bilateral trade matters and promoting commercial opportunities between the United States and China. Last year, it was held in Hangzhou, China, and during the meetings China agreed to reopen its market to U.S. pork and to remove barriers for American firms to China's growing clean energy market.
