U.S. and Russia to Talk Poultry Trade

American delegation will visit Russia later this month.

Published: Jan 5, 2010

A top Russian official says Russia and the United States are set to meet to resolve the row over U.S. poultry imports. This development follows Moscow's implementation of a ban on imports of poultry treated with chlorine to kill pathogens. Moscow considers chlorine a health hazard, while Washington has said Russia's ban is unwarranted because chlorine is a safe and effective antimicrobial supported by science.

James Miller, USDA undersecretary of Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, says an American delegation will be in Russia on January 17 to work on solving the problem. Gennady Onishchenko, Russia's chief sanitary official, agreed to discuss the issue after, what he considered to be, productive telephone conversations with Miller.
