Upper Midwest Feeling Effects of Flooding

Vilsack extends sign-up for floodplain easement.
Compiled by staff
Published: Mar 27, 2009

It's already been a long week for many folks along the Red River in North Dakota. They have been working day and night to sandbag key areas in hopes of minimizing any potential flooding. At Fargo, the Red River is expected to crest this Saturday at 41 feet - the highest in recent history.

While USDA is working to provide safe food stuffs for affected flood victims, the Department is also preparing for what happens after flood waters recede. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has said he will extend the sign-up period for floodplain easement assistance until April 10. Up to $145 million dollars is available through the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009. Technical and financial assistance will help restore frequently flooded land to its natural state.

Eligible landowners can visit their local Natural Resources Conservation Service office to sign-up. Eligibility requirements and other information is available at www.nrcs.usda.gov.
