Crop insurance options for preventive planting usually apply to areas with drought. However USDA Risk Management Agency Administrator Eldon Gould says that is not likely to hold true this year.
"This whole issue of floods and preventive planting is not something we typically face in the Midwest," Gould says. "Because of that we've kind of got to get ourselves re-educated and get the word out to producers about what their options are."
Gould says producers should talk to their local crop insurance agents as soon as possible to see what their options are. He says it's important to know the specifics because while several policies do include preventive planting options, several others do not cover that.
