Transforming the U.S. Grains Council Begins in Panama

Annual USGC meeting will involve members in applying strategic plan.

Panama Canal modernization isn't the only fresh, new development to be explored at the U.S. Grains Council's February membership meeting. Transforming the Council itself will be part of the agenda, as the Council debuts its newly approved strategic plan for 2012 to 2016.

"This will be more than a report," said Tom Sleight, Vice President of Operations and Membership. "From hallway discussions to working sessions, members can expect to see and be part of applying this plan to guide the Council's work."

Sleight, who called the plan "transformational," also promises it is highly comprehensive. "It offers a very strategic analysis of the Council's strengths and weaknesses and of the opportunities and threats we face," he commented. "It goes beyond strategic goals to outline the actions we must take, how we will measure performance, and the next steps in that process.

"We think members and outside stakeholders will be excited about the expanded initiatives in this plan and their implications for strengthening our export programs," Sleight said.

The plan, approved by the Council's Board of Directors on Dec. 13, was developed with input from three primary sources: an in-depth analysis of the Council's international structure and country programs; a comprehensive strategic communications initiative based on extensive interviews with internal and external stakeholders; and an ongoing discussion and evaluation by the Board and officers of organizational challenges posed by a changing global marketplace.

Full details of the plan will be released at the Council's opening general session on Monday morning, Feb. 13, at the Hotel Riu Plaza Panama in Panama City.
