Peter Mandleson, the European Union's trade commissioner said Tuesday that global trade talks may benefit from rising food prices that reduce pressure to maintain farm subsidies.
The Doha Round of world trade talks have drug on with farm subsidy disputes one of the major stumbling blocks in negotiations. However, trade ministers meeting in Davos, Switzerland last week for the World Economic Forum showed optimism that talks can move forward.
Mandleson told reporters that he agreed with President George Bush who stressed the need to conclude global trade talks in Monday's State of the Union. He says most people think getting a deal done next year will be harder and that talks need to finish in 2008.
