According to the Natural Agricultural Statistics Service, the U.S. inventory of hogs and pigs went up 1% between September 1 2005 and 2006 and 2% from June 1, 2006 to 62.7 million head.

Market hog inventory was up 1% from last year and 2% from last quarter at 56.6 million, while breeding inventory, at 6.08 million, was up 2% from last year and saw a slight increase from last quarter.

The June-August 2006 pig crop was up 1 percent  from 2005 and up 2  percent from 2004 and is currently at 26.7 million head. Sows farrowing during this  period totaled 2.92 million head, up slightly from 2005 and up 1  percent from 2004. The average pigs saved per litter increased slightly in the June-August  2006 period from last year.  Pigs saved per litter by size of operation ranged from 7.70 for  operations with 1-99 hogs and pigs to 9.20 for operations with more  than 5,000 hogs and pigs.

U.S. hog producers intend to have 2.92 million sows farrow during the  September-November 2006 quarter, up 1 percent from the actual  farrowings in both 2005 and 2004. Intended farrowings for December  2006-February 2007, at 2.90 million sows, are up 2 percent from both  2006 and 2005.

The number of hogs under contract owned by operations with over 5,000 head remained at 39 percent of the total inventory, the same as 2005.
