The Wheels On The Rig Go Round And Round

Center-pivot wheels got a lot of attention at Husker Harvest Days this year.

Published: Sep 30, 2011

Center-pivot sprinklers working in their own waterfall many times leave irrigators with ruts to fill, downtime in "unsticking" swamped tower wheels and fixing flats.

This year's exhibitor list at Husker Harvest Days, the world's largest fully-irrigated demonstration show, included a bevy of folks trying to solve those problems – with wheel add-ons.

Here are three we found while cruising the streets at HHD:

Chief Fabrication is marketing the Pivot Walker as a solution to rutting in center-pivot fields. Pivoting foot pads evenly distribute the weight of the tower and mud is prevented from pushing out from under the pad by angled side plates and cleats. The design provides better flotation than typical pivot wheels. For more information on the Pivot Walker, visit www.chieffabrication.com, or call (800) 626-7811.

RAAFT Tracks by Polytech, LLC. offers a tough polymer plastic track addition for center pivot wheels to prevent rutting and downtime. Links in the tracks are designed with an oval pivot to allow the tracks to adjust to uneven ground and prevent spinning. Installation in the field requires installing 4-6 bolts per tower – depending upon the model. For more information, visit www.raaft.com, or call (402) 261-5774.

MACH II is making news in irrigation fields with its plastic sprinkler tower tires, made from recycled materials, and designed to fit nearly every center-pivot wheel size used. The bolt-on lugged tires offer superior traction and resistance to delamination, and when the time comes to replace them, they are 100% recyclable. For more formation on Mach II tires, visit www.mach2tires.com or call (920) 767-1212.
