The Buzz: USDA Report Clears Way for Acreage Debate

The biggest impact of the government numbers may be to help the corn and soybean markets focus on the battle to buy acres.

In the latest edition of The Buzz video report, Senior Editor Bryce Knorr said fundamentals appear to suggest fewer corn acres this spring, due to squeezed margins and high fertilizer costs. Bean plantings are likely to rise as a result, but Market Analyst Arlan Suderman said today's cut in ending stocks should be helpful to soy prices, though he doesn't expect a huge rally.

Perhaps the biggest negative from the report came in wheat, where USDA increased ending stocks. Suderman noted that dry weather on the southwest Plains may be enough of a factor to keep the market alive, at least for a while.

Knorr reminded viewers that Farm Futures releases its planting intentions survey March 17, followed by a special online edition of The Bear Pit. Knorr and Suderman will discuss the survey and the spring price outlook. They also will answer questions emailed in advance.
