Published: Mar 26, 2008

President George Bush announced Wednesday that he will nominate A. Ellen Terpstra to be the chief agricultural negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Her new job carries the rank of ambassador. It will require Senate confirmation. Terpstra currently is the USDA's deputy undersecretary of farm and foreign services and has been part of USDA's negotiating team on the Doha Round of the World Trade Organization talks. Terpstra will replace USDA Chief Economist Joe Glauber, who has served simultaneously as the lead U.S. negotiator.

Prior to her current USDA position, Terpstra served as Administrator of the Foreign Agricultural Service. Earlier in her career, she was the president and chief executive officer of the USA Rice Federation. Terpstra received her bachelor's degree from Georgetown University.

"Ellen Terpstra is an exceptional candidate to become the next Chief Agricultural Negotiator," says Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association. "She is dedicated to opening new export markets for agriculture and has tremendous skills to achieve meaningful results for our sector."
