Telling the DDGS Story

U.S. Grains Council holds workshop in Japan reviewing the merits of this byproduct feed source.

There's an opportunity to market U.S. dried distillers grains with solubles overseas and the U.S. Grains Council wants to help make that happen. The group recognizes the market potential in Japan and recently organized workshops on DDGS in Kagoshima and Tokyo for poultry producers, feed millers, traders and government officials.

In a press statement, National Corn Growers Association Trade Policy and Biotechnology Action Team Chair Chad Blindaur observes: "DDGS represent another win-win opportunity to build upon this relationship. As knowledge of the benefits of this ethanol coproduct grows, so does its popularity abroad." He notes this creates opportunities for both livestock and ethanol producers alike.

Japanese consumption of DDGS has increased steadily over the last several years, from 2,500 metric tons in 2005 to 270,000 tons in 2009, with Japan's poultry sector showing the most significant growth. More than 50 participants took part in active discussions regarding recent feeding trials with layers and broilers, and confirmed the significant merits of DDGS improving performance in feed efficiency, quality of meat and color of the egg yolk.
