Task Force Appointed to Examine NCBA Governance Structure

Identifying possible improvements will begin at Cattle Industry Summer Conference.

A newly appointed task force of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association will begin looking at more than 100 years of cattle group mergers next week to determine if NCBA's "governance structure" needs to be changed to make the organization more effective and efficient, according to an announcement. The task force is charged with identifying improvements that would strengthen NCBA's service to its members, especially in responding to consumer, legislative and regulatory issues affecting cattle and beef production.

NCBA is the product of several cattle organizations that came together in the last 100-plus years "to fight for cattlemen's rights and solve the industry's toughest challenges," noted NCBA president Andy Grosetta, a rancher from Cottonwood, Ariz. "Our governance structure shows signs of being a product of (those) multiple mergers, and it needs to be evaluated to ensure its effectiveness and efficiency for the next 100 years."

Grosetta, NCBA president-elect Gary Voogt, an Angus producer in Michigan, and vice president Steve Fogleson, a cow/calf producer and feedlot operator in Illinois, named two former presidents - immediate past president John Queen from North Carolina and Jan Lyons from Kansas - as co-chairs of the task force. The five, in turn, selected 18 task force members from nominations that were received from across the U.S.

The task force is scheduled to begin its review at the Cattle Industry Summer Conference in Denver, Colo., next week with a listening session from 4:45 to 6:00 p.m. on July 17.
