Tally of Soybean Rust-Infected Areas Spreads

Just how many counties have reported finding the disease?
Compiled by staff
Published: Aug 30, 2007

Soybean rust, the hot topic for the market two years ago, remains largely a Southern issue, but it has spread to new geography for 2007. The folks at Dow Jones have tallied up the number of acres impacted by the disease and note that so far this season 84 counties and parishes across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas have reported finding the disease.

Heat and drought continue as the best defense against the disease as dry weather has kept rust from moving too far north. Conditions are expected to remain dry for several more days and at this time of the year every day the disease doesn't move is a day that soybean farmers can breathe easier. After soybeans reach R6 soybean rust damage has little impact on yield.

Conditions have also been poor for spore transport, which has also kept the disease from spreading too far.
