Hundreds of thousands Argentineans rallied Sunday against the sliding-scale soy export tax that has caused a number of farm worker strikes. Heated negotiations with the government have failed and Argentine farm leaders said that if there are no solutions Monday, they will take action Tuesday.
At a government-sponsored counter gathering, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner spoke in favor of the tariffs, saying that the taxes were meant to obtain equal distribution of wealth throughout the country.
The strike, which began Mar. 8, has blocked roads and shut down shipping. A 30-day truce was called in April to try and reach some solution, but talks broke down and the strike resumed. Negotiations began again Thursday, but a 90 minute meeting was unsuccessful. Talks that had been scheduled for Monday were cancelled by the government.
