Most producers and custom operators deduct their machinery repair and maintenance costs on their tax schedule F, giving them an idea of what they spend each year. But how does that cost total break down on a per-acre or per-hour basis for a particular piece of equipment on a particular crop? William Lazarus of the University of Minnesota developed a spreadsheet to help you do that. The spreadsheet uses equations developed by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers to estimate costs, and then to adjust them so that they are consistent with your schedule F totals.
