Success of Doha May Hinge on Smaller Meetings

While no formal WTO meetings are scheduled, several bi-lateral meetings could shape the trade deal.

Several nations are holding small meetings discussing global trade this week. A meeting that may determine whether or not the Doha Round of trade talks succeed or fail is a gathering of Indian, Brazilian and South African leaders.

"We hope they will also signal their willingness to open their markets as part of the Doha Round negotiations," says U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab.

Schwab says those three nations have been among the most adamant about keeping their markets limited to U.S. imports and breaking down developed country's subsidies.

The U.S. recently made an offer to be flexible on farm subsidies in exchange for greater market access. If Brazil and India don't make some concessions, many analysts see the trade talks stalling dramatically.

"We need to see more from India," Schwab says. "We need to see Brazil doing more in manufacturing goods as far as opening up their markets."
