A shipload of U.S. corn arrived in China this week for the first time in nearly 15 years. The shipment cleared customs without delay after arrival Monday.
Jim Miller, USDA Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Ag Services, says that the opportunities for the United States to have a more normal trading relationship with China across a broad range of commodities is going to be good for both countries.
U.S. Grains Council CEO Tom Dorr, a former USDA Undersecretary, agrees with Miller saying China's acceptance of U.S. corn might signal additional sales and opportunities.
"There will always be cultural, and social, and economic challenges," Dorr said. "But in the long run I think it's a good sign of a more sustainable kind of access for U.S. producers."
And Dorr says that access to the Chinese market will be for more than just corn producers.
"Their demand for high quality protein products is going to have to be supplemented," Dorr said. "With outside feed grains and I think in the long term with outside meat, milk and egg products."
Dorr notes another vessel of U.S. corn is scheduled to discharge next month.
