USDA officials recently had the opportunity to testify on the department's research and financing activities for next generation biofuels. The House Ag Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy and Research met to review the opportunities and challenges facing the development of advanced biofuels. They also heard from companies and organizations focused on developing advanced biofuels who provided updates on the current and future direction of the industry.
Subcommittee Chairman Tim Holden, D-Penn., said the message was loud and clear that it's critical to build and strengthen public and private partnerships. If the nation is serious about the next generation of biofuels he says constant and stable federal policies are needed and more needs to be done to spur private investment and encourage further research on feedstock development.
Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., the Subcommittee's Ranking Member said advanced biofuels technology has enormous opportunity to create renewable fuels across the nation and added that research in the area can bridge technology between agriculture, energy and biotechnology. But according to Goodlatte those goals can only be accomplished if energy needs are met without the requirement of government mandates.
