Still A Ways to Go Before Health Care Reform

Procedure, holidays delay consideration in both chambers.

Published: Nov 4, 2009

In the U.S. Senate, Health care reform could be weeks away. Senate Democrats hope that next week they will receive an official cost analysis of the Senate health care reform legislation from the Congressional Budget Office. Amendments, procedural challenges and holiday breaks for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving will either interrupt or delay any consideration of the Senate bill.

In the House, Republicans are preparing to unveil a reform bill to compete with the majority's ideas. The alternative measure is expected to be much narrower in scope and more modest in its goals. House Minority Leader John Beohner, R-Ohio, says his party's bill had been sent to the Congressional Budget Office for scoring. He expects it to be ready in the next several days.

The bill written by House Republicans would: let families and businesses buy health insurance across state lines; allow individuals, small businesses, and trade associations to pool together and acquire health insurance at lower prices; give states the tools to create their own innovative reforms that lower health care costs; and end junk lawsuits that contribute to higher health care costs.
