Start Date Finally Set for ACRE Sign-up

Producers will be able to choose new program on April 27.

After several months of delays as details were worked out, a firm date has been set for the start of sign-up for the Average Crop Revenue Election program. Eligible farmers will be able to choose the new program that was put forward in the 2008 Farm Bill on April 27, 2009.

"The Average Crop Revenue Election program is an innovative alternative to the traditional farm safety," Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said. "This new option presents an opportunity for producers to review both programs and decide which one will work best for their operation."

Originally sign-up for the program was to end on June 1, but USDA decided to extend sign-up for both ACRE and the Direct and Counter-cyclical Program until Aug. 14. That decision was made to give farmers more time to determine which program would be most beneficial for their operation.

Producers who choose ACRE have to fill out Form CCC-509, which locks in place the farm in the ACRE program through the 2012 crop year, though a new form must be filled out each year.

Your local Farm Service Agency has more information on the ACRE program or visit www.fsa.usda.gov.
