Texas has reported the first ever state positive for soybean rust. This find is on kudzu outside Dayton, Texas in Liberty County.
The samples were collected Nov. 2. There is apparently no other known patch of kudzu in this county and 12 soybean fields two to12 miles away from the confirmed patch had no symptoms of soybean rust, according to USDA's Soybean Rust Web page.
The soybean rust model predicts some soybean rust transport and depositions Monday through Wednesday from northeastern Texas through Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, northern Georgia and into the Carolinas on Wednesday.
Edgecombe County, N.C. is the farthest north and Hyde County, NC is the farthest east location where soybean rust has been found in 2005. Liberty County in Texas is the furthest west that rust has been found in 2005. Alabama now has 31 counties reported positive with rust; Florida has 23; Georgia has 34; Mississippi has two; South Carolina has 23; North Carolina has 15; Louisiana has 1; and Texas has 1. There were 35 counties that reported soybean rust in the month of August with ten reports for September, forty-seven in October, and 22 so far in November.
As the growing season has finished or nearly finished in most regions, the threat of rust has diminished. It may be expected that rust will continue to be found in more counties within states already reporting rust and in adjacent states without causing any economic damage.
