Parana, the second leading soy state in Brazil, produced a surprising soy yield this weekend. According to consulting firm Agroconsult, which is touring the country, many farms averaged between 22 and 28 60-kilogram bags per acre, as opposed to last year's average of 16 bags per acre.
"The varieties used combined well with the climate this year. Everything worked out perfect for a lot of these farmers," says Andre Pessoa, director of Agroconsult.
Parana is still in the early stages of its harvest, and about 17% of Brazil's total soybean crop has been harvested. Agroconsult is currently predicting 56.7 million metric tons, but its final number, set to be released March 29, is expected to be higher.
