South Korean Beef Trade is Not Progressing

The team of U.S. trade negotiators was not successful in Seoul last week.

A group of trade negotiators from the U.S. Trade Representative's office and USDA traveled to Seoul, South Korea to discuss beef trade last Thursday and Friday. USDA Undersecretary Chuck Lambert led the team, which hoped to widen beef trade with South Korea. However, the discussions were not as successful as the team had hoped.

"I'm extremely disappointed over the lack of progress that has been made over these technical discussions," says acting Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Conner. "I do urge Korea to stand behind their commitment, the commitment made by their president to adhere to international standards for trade in beef under the OIE guidelines."

The team of negotiators representing USTR and USDA will be traveling to several other countries over the next few weeks to urge our trading partners to move to international science-based guidelines in regards to U.S. beef.
